Invoking the spirit of a limited series, competition-focused 1968 Mustang, Revology Cars is producing a special edition of its Cobra Jet fastback model.
In 1968, Ford made a run of 50 very special Mustang fastbacks, powered by the then-new Cobra Jet 428 cu. in. V8. Equipped with 4-speed transmissions, 3.89:1 rear gears, and available only in Wimbledon White with black interior, these homologation specials were built to qualify for NHRA stock racing classes. Known as the “135” series Cobra Jet due to their consecutive VIN numbers starting with the digits 135, these Mustangs became famous for their success in drag racing competition.
Revology’s tribute to the ‘135’ series Mustang comes in the form of a 1968 Cobra Jet 2+2 fastback, painted in Wimbledon White like the original and powered by a 710hp, 5.0-liter Roush supercharged V8 engine. The Revology 135 Series features several design elements from the original 135, including the floating pony grille without fog lamps, Mustang fender emblems, standard fuel cap, turn-down exhaust tips, and black wrinkle finish interior veneers.
Revology will produce only five 135 Series Mustangs, the first of which will be delivered to Ralph Gronefeld of Shepherdsville, KY. Already the proud owner of a Revology 1965 GT 2+2 fastback, Ralph thought a Revology 135 Series would be a neat addition to his growing collection. He called Yoshi Amano, Revology Cars’ vice-president of marketing, sales and service, and pitched her the idea.
“We don’t do custom cars, so at first I was skeptical,” says Amano. “But Ralph is already a Revology client, so I listened. And when I heard the story, I thought, this is cool—and there are probably more people out there who will be interested. So we proposed it to our team, and they were on board.”
Why only five cars? There are several unique parts needed for the 135 Series that add manufacturing complexity, which goes against the company’s efforts toward continuous improvement in quality and efficiency. Says Amano, “A limited run allows us to offer a more diverse portfolio while maintaining our intense focus on quality and efficiency. We’ve done this before, and it works. You will probably see more of this from us in the future.”
